Some OSJs Are Just Wirehouses With Better Marketing
(I’m Mike Gordon, independent recruiter and transition consultant. I help match successful advisor-owners with better RIAs, BDs, and OSJs. You work with me when you want an experienced advocate to guide you through firm research, vetting, and negotiations. I’m the Advisor’s Advisor.)
Most of the advisors I talk to who are unhappy at an OSJ or hybrid RIA will tell you the same thing: the pitch was great. The reality took about eighteen months to reveal itself.
They are paying an override for support they are doing themselves. They cannot leave their custodian without leaving the OSJ. When something breaks, the OSJ points at the custodian, and the custodian points back. The advisor is stuck in the middle of a blame loop that they are paying for.
What I Keep Seeing
The thing that catches advisors off guard (and I hear this surprisingly often) is that they had more control at their wirehouse than they do at their OSJ. That is not what they were sold, but it is what they are living. The override only makes sense if the layer above you delivers on its promise to remove friction from your day. When it is adding friction instead, you have just traded one set of constraints for a more expensive version of the same thing.
Your OSJ Prenup
Before I let an advisor sign with an OSJ or hybrid RIA, I want to know one thing: what happens when this does not work out? Can you stay with the same custodian? What do the release terms actually say? Most advisors do not ask those questions on the way in. Some of them are still dealing with the consequences years later. If a firm will not let you talk to advisors who have left, that tells you everything you need to know about the culture.
The Right One Is Out There
There are OSJs doing this right. I have placed advisors in structures that worked exactly the way they were supposed to, and those advisors are genuinely glad they went that route. The ones who got it right vetted it right and pushed back on the pitch. They talked to people who had been there for a few years. They read the contract.
If you are evaluating an OSJ or hybrid RIA or already in one that is not delivering what was promised, that is a sweet spot of mine. I have lots of successful reps helping advisors like you.
